Australia remains the most popular study destination for Nepali students — world-class universities, generous work rights, and a large Nepali community. But the rules tightened in 2026, so a well-prepared application matters more than ever. Here is what you actually need to know, in plain language.
The visa: Subclass 500
International students apply for the Student Visa (Subclass 500), which covers full-time study at a CRICOS-registered institution for the length of your course. It lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks.
What changed in 2026: stricter checks for Nepal
In January 2026, Australia moved Nepal to Assessment Level 3 under its student-visa framework. In practice, that means every application from Nepal is checked manually, and you must submit complete financial evidence and English test results up front. Half-prepared applications that might have slipped through before now get refused — preparation is everything.
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement
Australia wants to see that your primary purpose is to study. Your GS statement must show clear career logic: why this course, why Australia, why now, and how it connects to your plans back home. A generic, copied statement is the single most common reason for refusal — yours must tell your story.
What you'll need
- An offer letter (CoE) from a CRICOS-registered university or college
- English test results — most universities ask for IELTS 6.0–6.5 (check your course's exact requirement)
- Proof of funds covering tuition plus living costs — the benchmark is around AUD 29,710 per year for living expenses, plus travel
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your visa duration
- A strong Genuine Student statement and complete, consistent documentation
Figures and rules change — always confirm current requirements before you apply, or let us confirm them for you.
A realistic timeline
Plan 6–9 months ahead of your intake. IELTS preparation and testing (1–2 months), university applications and offer (1–2 months), financial documentation (often the slowest step for Nepali families — bank maturity periods matter), then visa lodgement and processing. Starting early is the cheapest stress-reducer there is.
