For most Nepali students, IELTS is the first concrete step of the study-abroad journey — and the good news is you can prepare and sit the test without leaving Pokhara. Here is how it works in 2026.
Where you take the test
IELTS in Nepal is run by IDP and the British Council, and Pokhara has its own IDP test centre — no more overnight bus to Kathmandu. Computer-based tests run almost daily; paper-based tests happen on fixed dates each month.
Computer or paper?
- Computer-based: results in 2–5 days, more date choices, typing instead of handwriting
- Paper-based: results in about 13 days, fixed dates, better if you think faster with a pen
Both versions are identical in content and difficulty — the Speaking test is face-to-face with an examiner either way. Most of our students choose computer for the faster results.
Fees and booking
As of 2026 the IELTS fee in Nepal is around NPR 36,000 for the standard test (UKVI versions cost slightly more). Fees change — always check the current amount on the IDP or British Council site when you book. You will need your valid passport to register, and the same passport on test day.
What score do you need?
- Australia: most universities ask for 6.0–6.5 overall
- UK: typically 6.0–6.5, with UKVI requirements for some courses
- Canada: 6.0–6.5 for most programs
- USA & New Zealand: varies widely by university — often 6.0+
Remember: many universities also require a minimum band in each module, not just overall — a 6.5 overall with a 5.0 in Writing can still be rejected.
How to prepare (what actually works)
- Build a daily English habit: 30 minutes of listening (podcasts, news) beats a 5-hour weekend cram
- Practice with real past papers under timed conditions — the clock is half the difficulty
- Get your Writing marked by someone qualified — self-study plateaus fastest in Writing
- Speak English daily, even imperfectly — fluency grows from use, not theory
